St. George Island's Winter Runs Through Lighthouse Park While the State Park Campground Grows

Drive to the east end of E. Gulf Beach Drive this month and Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park still opens at 8 a.m. The campground inside it does not. The park has posted a closure notice for the campground, effective July 13, 2026, citing renovations.

So this winter, the park at 1900 E. Gulf Beach Drive works as a daytime park that closes at sunset. The island's evening calendar from late November through December 23 is set at the Cape St. George Light, and two of those evenings are timed to the minute around a sunset and a moonrise.

A Bigger Campground on the Other Side of the Fence

The campground is closed for an expansion. The Friends of Franklin County State Parks, the park's support group, described the project in its spring update:

"We anticipate that the campground will be closed to overnight guests for approximately one year while we add 30 campsites, a new bathhouse and playground, and resurface campground roads. The camping reservation system will re-open when construction is completed."

That's four separate projects in one closure:

  • 30 added campsites, which means the campground comes back larger than it was.
  • A new bathhouse.
  • A new playground.
  • Resurfaced campground roads.

The Friends group's estimate of about one year runs from the summer start, which points to the middle of 2027 for overnight camping. That's an estimate, not a firm date. Camping reservations reopen when construction is finished.

If you live on the island, the shift is easy to picture. Over the winter, the park's east end has no overnight guests. When the campground reopens, it will have 30 more sites than before, so the after-dark population at the far end of E. Gulf Beach Drive will be larger than it was before the closure.

What the Park Still Offers by Day

The closure covers the campground only. Park hours are still 8 a.m. to sunset, 365 days a year, and the entrance fee is $6 per vehicle. According to the Florida State Parks page for the park, its day-use features include the following.

East Slough Overlook Trail. The trail runs about a mile and can be reached from a point on the campground trail or from the East Slough Beach Use Area. With the campground closed, the beach-use-area access is the one to plan around.

Two natural boat ramps. One is at the youth/group camp and the other is at East Slough. Both are limited to small, shallow-draft boats under 24 feet. Entry with a boat costs $8 for one person or $10 for two to eight people.

Gap Point Trail. This 2.5-mile trail starts in the campground. If Gap Point is part of your usual weekend loop, call the park at 850-927-2111 before you go.

Gap Point primitive sites and the youth/group camp. The state lists these separately from the family campground. The same phone call is the quickest way to check either one.

The park's own description promises "the best stargazing in the Panhandle." The gates close at sunset, though, so this season's after-dark events are scheduled at the lighthouse.

The Lighthouse Sets the Evening Schedule

The St. George Lighthouse Association's gift shop is the season's home base. Museum admission is free, and the museum includes a Fresnel lens exhibit. Climb tickets are sold at the shop, along with souvenirs. Every dated event from late November through December 23 below takes place at the lighthouse or in Lighthouse Park around it.

  1. Sunday, November 22: 10th Annual Holiday Sip & Shop. The Lighthouse Gift Shop is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for its tenth holiday shopping day, with Meet the Maker, exclusive merchandise, wine and refreshments. Details are on the St. George Lighthouse Association's event page.
  2. Tuesday, November 24: Sunset and Full Moon Climb. The Cape St. George Light is open for climbing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.
  3. Friday, December 4: Lighting of the Palms. The SGI Business Association hosts holiday crafts, games and Santa at Lighthouse Park, lights the palms at dusk and finishes with a golf-cart parade. The listing is on the Franklin County tourism calendar.
  4. Wednesday, December 23: Sunset and Full Moon Climb. The second climb of the season runs 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Tickets are $10.

The Sip & Shop on November 22 and the full-moon climb on November 24 are two days apart, and you buy climb tickets at the same gift shop that hosts the Sip & Shop. If the climb is on your list, getting tickets during the Sip & Shop saves a second trip.

Two Climbs, Timed Differently

On each full-moon night, the moon comes up before the sun goes down. How much earlier changes a lot between the two dates, and that affects when to climb.

On November 24, sunset is at 5:41 p.m. and moonrise is at 5:38 p.m., according to the Association's calendar. That's a three-minute gap. The climb opens at 5:30 p.m., so a climber who goes up early can watch the moon rise and the sun set within a few minutes of each other.

On December 23, sunset is at 5:46 p.m. and moonrise is at 5:23 p.m. This time the moon is up 23 minutes before sunset, and the climb doesn't open until 5:45 p.m. By the time the first climbers reach the gallery, the moon has been above the horizon for more than 20 minutes, and sunset is a minute away.

In practice:

  • For the November climb, arrive close to the 5:30 p.m. opening. Both events fall in the first quarter hour.
  • For the December climb, expect a moon already well up and the sun nearly down when the climb opens at 5:45 p.m. After that, the evening is mostly moonlight over the water.

Both climbs end within two hours of opening, at 7:30 p.m. in November and 7:45 p.m. in December.

Where the Two Calendars Meet

From now through December 23, the state park and the lighthouse keep different hours. The park opens at 8 a.m. and closes at sunset. All four lighthouse events run past sunset: the Sip & Shop until 6 p.m., the palm lighting at dusk, and both climbs until 7:30 p.m. or later.

That makes it easy to fit both into one day. Walk the East Slough Overlook Trail in the morning, when the $6 vehicle entry gets you into the beach use areas. Then head to Lighthouse Park for the evening. On December 4 that means the palm lighting and golf-cart parade. On November 24 and December 23 it means the climb.

The campground stays closed through all of this while crews build out its 30 new sites, new bathhouse, new playground and resurfaced roads. To check a specific trail or ramp before you go, the ranger station is at 850-927-2111.

When the expanded campground reopens, overnight visitors will return to the east end of the island in larger numbers than before.
